Little Hikes on the Prairie
This spring, I’ve been hiking through the stunning Stagecoach Prairie at Belwin Nature Conservancy in Afton, MN. This has become a go-to thought and soul cleansing activity that I welcome. I welcome it because it works. After an hour or so of hiking at Belwin, breathing in the wide open spaces, feeling the wind on my face, the burn of walking up and down hills in my legs, and soaking in the beauty, I am renewed. My mind is clear, my heart is open, my body feels strong and connected to the Earth
East of the Twin Cities, Belwin is a sanctuary for both wildlife and nature enthusiasts, offering a tranquil escape into the beauty of untouched landscapes. Belwin spans over 1,500 acres of diverse ecosystems, including prairies, woodlands, and wetlands. The Stagecoach Prairie, in particular, is a vibrant tapestry of native grasses and wildflowers that paint the landscape with a burst of color. This prairie is a testament to the importance of conservation efforts and the incredible biodiversity that thrives within.
Maintaining the Stagecoach Prairie is no small feat. Belwin's dedicated team of conservationists employs a variety of techniques to preserve and restore this vital habitat. Prescribed burns are one of the key methods used to manage the prairie. These controlled fires mimic natural processes, promoting the growth of native plants while keeping invasive species at bay. Additionally, regular mowing and selective herbicide applications help maintain the health and diversity of the prairie ecosystem.
The importance of the Stagecoach Prairie extends beyond its visual appeal. Prairies like this play a crucial role in the greater ecosystem. They provide habitat for countless species of birds, insects, and small mammals, fostering a rich web of life. The deep-rooted native grasses also contribute to soil health, preventing erosion and enhancing water retention. This, in turn, supports the surrounding woodlands and wetlands, creating a balanced and resilient environment.
Hiking the Stagecoach Prairie, I am reminded of the interconnectedness of all living things. Each step through the tall grasses and blooming wildflowers is a step into a living, breathing ecosystem, a reminder of the delicate balance we must strive to protect.
I hope you have a special place that you walk, a place that renews your mind and spirit and connects your body to the Earth. I deeply believe that with more and more women turning to walking for strength and renewal, our One Million Women Walking movement will become a force for good in the world.
