One Step At A Time . . .
We find ourselves in uncharted territory. Territory that has no trails, no roadmaps, no navigation. And like a nightmare, the territory changes on a daily, sometimes hourly basis. What do we do? How do we proceed? What can we do?
I approach this from two points perspectives: what we can do and what we cannot do. I’ll begin with the latter.
We cannot panic. We cannot retreat to our caves and become snarling, wounded, terrified creatures with fangs and claws bared, protecting ourselves with a lifetime supply of toilet paper. That serves no one. Rather than panic, we must acknowledge our fear, our frustration, our sense of hopelessness and overwhelm. Because in that simple moment of truth, of coming home to our emotions and how we feel in our bodies, we accept this strange new territory is real, this is happening, and we are in it. So be in it. Get in there with it and cry and rage and when you’re done with that part, the part of acknowledging where you’re at, you’ll know where you’re at.
And that is the beginning—your reference point. (I seriously doubt it will feel good but there is relief in acknowledging how you feel thus finding out where you are. Relief is good. Take it.) There is tremendous power in acknowledging where you are.
From your newly acknowledged reference point, you discover what you can do. It most likely will not be grandiose but it will be a step forward and here’s a bonus: you can now take your first step into this new uncharted territory, because you can always come back to the place you stepped from—your reference point.
Taking your first step into the uncharted may feel like the weirdest thing you’ve ever done in your life. Acknowledge it’s the weirdest thing you’ve done and that it’s not familiar, then take the step. I highly recommend that first step into the unknown be a literal step. Go for a walk.
Every single doctor and health/wellness expert on the planet is currently advocating walking. I am too and here’s why:
Walking boosts the immune system, lowers stress, and increases creativity. We all need those elements in our lives right now. These are the game changers we need to be nourishing.
To successfully navigate your way through this uncharted territory, take it one step at a time and make that first step a step on a walk. As you walk, activate your five senses, get in your body, breathe deeply and move. When we’re walking—moving our bodies through space—the answers we seek can find us. We connect with our wisdom such that we can begin to navigate the unknown. And in the process we’ve practiced profound, highly effective, scientifically proven self-care.
One step at a time everyone, let’s take this one step, one walk, one day at a time.
